A Sociolinguistic Analysis of Nigerianisms in selected Editorials of The Punch Newspapers

Abstract

This work provides an overview of the use of English in newspaper editorials. This research is conducted to explore Nigerianism in the selected editorials of The Punch Newspapers, one of Nigeria’s prominent print media outlets. Nigerianismin this context refers to the linguistic features, expressions, and idiomatic phrases that are peculiar to Nigerian English usage, reflecting the country’s cultural, historical, and social contexts. The language variation theory is used as an instrument to analyze the 10Punch Newspaper editorials which constitute the primary data for the study. The methodology employed include both qualitative and quantitative techniques. The paper affirms that Nigerianism should not be seen as evidence of weak proficiency in English language rather, it should be viewed as indices of acculturation and creative tendencies that are associated with other varieties of Eng
