EVALUATING THE NATURE OF CONSCIOUSNESS FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF THOMAS NAGEL

Damilola Peter Olatade
Abstract

The age long but irresolvable mind-body problem ever since it was formulated by the TFrench scholar, Renes Descartes, continues to be elusive as it pertains to where they interact. Various proposals have been put forward to surmount this intellectual gridlock but without success. It is from this background that in recent times, Thomas Nagel enters the discourse in order to ferment a viable solution as he seeks to resolve the quandary through an exploration of the nature of human consciousness from a materialistic and Neo-Darwinist shade. In spite of the depth and critical insights of his analysis, this research levels some flaws against Nagel to affirm that the mind-body problem, being a metaphysical issue continues as a persistent issue that may not receive finality.
