Abstract

The paper critically examines the concept of Ikwa Ogwe as philosophical methodology in Innocent Asouzu's philosophy of complementary reflection. It leverages on the metaphorical function of language in explanation, interpretation and understanding. The paper sets before itself the task of determining the nature of the linguistic tool and to understand how Ikwa Ogwe is explained by Asouzu as a mental seeing through a possibility to a solution of methodological problem. The study presupposes that speech events which enter human discourse in everyday communication is first artifice of the mind towards an intentional object in the 'missing-links' of reality. Typical metaphorical discourses show there is semantic problem of making sense in the seemingly tensed logical absurdity of metaphorical expressions. The analytic, hermeneutic and critical reflexive methods are used in the study. Therefore, rather than being a particular method, the concept Ikwa Ogwe is broad approach to explaining, interpreting and understanding reality.
