POSITIVIST PRINCIPLES AND THE PROBLEM OF LANGUAGE

J. A. OMOLAFE
Abstract

This article expresses great concern about the problem of religious language, which simply describes the category of all utterances about the nature of God and all other statements connected thereof. The challenge at hand stems from the arrogant claim of logical positivism that a statement has meaning only on the ground that it is verifiable and so, since religious language fall short of this requirement, it is nonsensical. This paper re-examines the traditional problem of religious language in the light of this challenge. It concludes that every type of language has its own logic and so the tenets of religion as expressed in its language is beyond the competence of logical positivists' scrutiny.
