Koinonia and the Unity of the Churches in the Twenty-First Century

Ferdinand Nwaigbo
Abstract

In the present century, there are so many unwarranted divisions and subjectivism among many churches and this is causing great harm to the fellowship of Christians. The concept of Koinonia is used to refer to the communion that exists in the community of Christians and this establishes unity in these communities. The height of this Koinonia is the Eucharistic celebration where Christ gathers his children together into one family of love Therefore, Koinonia as a theological concept establishes the relationship between God and his people, and the relationship between the people of God themselves. This paper therefore, examines the concept of Koinonia as a basis for resolving the many divisions in the Christian body today and it does this by first tracing the concept back to the Judeo-Christian tradition and thereby stating its relevance in the present century.
