The Charism of the Consecrated Life and the Exercise of Authority in the Church

Jude Abidemi Asanbe
Abstract

Often times, there are misrepresentations of the teaching and mission of the Church regarding the consecrated person in the Church. Many misrepresent the terms of charism and authority and even treat them as if they are two opposing ideas or models. And sometimes, even members of the Institutes of Consecrated Life are confused on the idea of obedience and loyalty to their superior and institutes and the diocese in which they serve or reside. This paper states that there is no opposition between charism and authority in the consecrated life and the paper clarifies this by making recourse to the document of the Church on the Consecrated Life “Vita Consecrata”.
