Abstract

The pros and cons of modern civilization can be witnessed evidently in our world today. This advancement however without prejudice to its impact to the society has brought about some negative values in our Core Traditional African Values which by extension affects the ecclesial community. This has raised some pertinent questions especially with regards seniority and respect among catholic priests. This essay seeks to respond to some of these issues starting with a brief consideration on axiology, examining the Yoruba culture with the view of establishing the true purpose of seniority. Taking perspectives from other cultures and the code of canon law, towards a realization that the culture of seniority is very much entrenched in the life of the church, and as such priest should cherish and integrate these values, employing them to strengthen their relationship for an effective evangelization.
