Liturgical Law in Sacrosanctum Concilium

Anthony O. Igbekele
Abstract

The liturgy is the highest worship and homage that can be given to God, the summit and source of the Christian life and the foundation of the Christian spirit. It is the work of God who desires to encounter humanity. It therefore has divine and human components. Liturgical laws regulate worship and bring about a balance in this intricate relationship so that the human person maintains the highest ideals in this encounter with God and refrains from trivializing the priceless possession bequeathed to the Church. Liturgical laws are therefore not restrictive of freedom, but promote the realization of authentic freedom to worship and serve God. The oft heard accusation of antinomianism against the Second Vatican Council cannot therefore be sustained when considered against the background that the Council, like the Council of Trent before it, gave distinctive laws that would guide the celebration of the public worship of the Church.
