IMITATIO CHRISTI IN THE AGE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: SOME ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS

Abstract

In an era of rapid evolution and extensive impact of artificial intelligence, morality is under a constant critical scrutiny, and new ethical structures are required to evaluate technological advancements and how they integrate human values and the gospel message. This study offers a moral perspective on the development and use of artificial intelligence rooted in imitatio Christi (imitation of Christ), the foundation for Christian discipleship and morality. The identity, life, teachings and ministry of Christ, characterised by unconditional love, truth, compassion, justice, humility, and so on, offer rich insights that can serve as a template for an ethically tolerable design of artificial intelligence and interaction with it. This paper critically examines contemporary ethical discussions regarding artificial intelligence emphasizing the flaws of algorithmic designs as they concern the significant issues of dignity, accountability, truth, and relationality. We posit that imitatio Christi represents the theological and ethical basis for evaluating the contributions of artificial intelligence to human happiness at least, from a Christian perspective. This interdisciplinary study challenges both theologians and technologists to contemplate how moral principles rooted in Christ’s logic of love may shape the future of artificial intelligence in ways that uphold and safeguard human dignity.
