USING APPLIED THEATRE TO CURB GENDER BASED VIOLENCE IN CALABAR MUNICIPALITY

Abstract

This study is set out to evaluate the use of Applied Theatre to curb gender based violence in Calabar Municipality. As objectives, this research set out to identify the nature of Gender based violence existent in Calabar Municipality, as well as employing the use of theatre to bring about change in behaviour. This study adopted Albert Bandura's Social Learning Theory as the framework that backed the research. To gather data, this study adopted Descriptive Qualitative research design through focus group discussion to gather data. The Findings revealed that Gender based violence is existent within Ikot Ansa community. Results also revealed that Theatre is a viable strategy in the campaign against Gender based violence. Results also revealed that the residents of Ikot Ansa community are enthusiastic about the use of performances to reflect the issues ongoing in the community; however there are limitations such as language barriers and lack of intervention programme for victims. The study research recommends that government of Calabar municipality should adopt Theatre as a major tool in consistently creating awareness within Ikot Ansa. This should be backed up by intervention programme and support from the State Government and nongovernmental organisation to expressly assist victims. Keywords:
