WOMEN: THE BURDEN BEARERS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Domestic violence is that violence or abuse that happens within the domestic setting. It is used as a synonym for intimate partner violence, which is committed by one of the people in an intimate relationship against the other person. Domestic violence is a serious matter that must be addressed and dealt with in the contemporary society. It can take place between spouses, against children, parent or the elderly. It can be in multiple forms, which include physical, verbal, emotional, economic, religious, reproductive, finance or social. It is now becoming a great evil, immoral and a great monster in today’s society and mostly affected are the women. When God created them, He created them male and female – Gen. 1:27 and co-equals because the woman was from the man’s side not the head nor foot given them equal opportunities and level playing ground. But today, the world is male dominated in every aspect of life. Male rule and governed. Domestic violence is as old as humanity when Cain killed Abel – Gen. 4:8 because of envy, hatred, anger etc. This paper takes a critical look at different types of domestic violence, how the women are affected, and as the burden bearers. It will proffer solutions that will mitigate the effects of domestic violence on women.
