This study examines the impact of social media on language use and literacy skills, exploring both positive and negative effects. The research reveals that social media has transformed language use, introducing new vocabulary, abbreviations, and acronyms, while simplifying grammar and syntax. Social media platforms, such as Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok, have created new discourse practices, including hashtags and @mentions. The study finds that social media has both empowered and challenged individuals in their language use and literacy skills. While it offers opportunities for language learning and exposure to diverse language varieties, it also poses risks such as decreased attention span, informal language use, and superficial reading habits. Findings include: Social media has expanded vocabulary and introduced new language use practices. Social media prioritizes brevity and informality, simplifying grammar and syntax. Social media platforms have created new discourse practices, including hashtags and @mentions. Social media has both positive and negative effects on literacy skills, including reading and writing. The study concludes that understanding the impact of social media on language use and literacy skills is crucial for educators, policymakers, and individuals navigating the digital landscape.
