Chika Obiageli Ezeudo, Ph.D
Abstract

This study examines the interplay between language proficiency and national development through the lens of the education and economic empowerment theory proposed by Psacharopoulos and Woodhall (1985). The research investigates the relationship between language proficiency, educational attainment, economic empowerment, and national development outcomes. Using a quantitative approach, the study analyzes data from a range of sources, including international assessments, educational databases, and economic indicators. The findings suggest that language proficiency is a critical determinant of educational attainment, economic empowerment, and national development. The study reveals that individuals with high language proficiency are more likely to access better education, secure higher-paying jobs, and contribute to economic growth. Furthermore, countries with high levels of language proficiency are better positioned to participate in the global economy, attract foreign investment, and achieve sustainable development. The research also highlights the importance of language proficiency in promoting social mobility, reducing poverty, and improving health outcomes. The findings suggest that language proficiency is a key driver of economic empowerment, which in turn is essential for national development. The study concludes that language proficiency is a critical factor in determining national development outcomes and recommends that policymakers prioritize language education and training programs to promote economic empowerment and sustainable development.
