Environmental sustainability in university communities is influenced by multiple factors, including religious teachings and human relations. In Nigerian universities, where religion plays a significant role in shaping values and social interactions, religious studies provide a moral foundation that encourages environmental stewardship. Many faith traditions emphasize the ethical responsibility to care for the earth, fostering a sense of duty among students and staff. At the same time, human relations determine how effectively sustainability initiatives are implemented, as collaboration, leadership, and peer influence shape attitudes and behaviours toward environmental conservation. Despite these positive influences, challenges such as weak policy enforcement, financial constraints, resistance to change, and inadequate coordination among stakeholders often hinder sustainable practices in universities. Addressing these challenges requires a comprehensive approach that integrates religious teachings with institutional policies, promotes open dialogue among university members, and enhances leadership commitment to green initiatives. By strengthening sustainability education through faith-based discussions, encouraging collective action through strong interpersonal relationships, and implementing enforceable policies, Nigerian universities can foster a culture of environmental responsibility. This study highlights the interconnected roles of religious studies and human relations in promoting sustainability, emphasizing the need for a holistic approach to environmental conservation in university communities. By leveraging ethical teachings and fostering collaboration, universities can become catalysts for long-term sustainable practices that extend beyond the academic environment.
