The Niger Delta region of Nigeria, a vital hub for oil and gas production, faces a complex dilemma: balancing the urgent need for economic development with the imperative of environmental conservation. This study examines the challenges of achieving this delicate equilibrium, focusing on the Niger Delta's unique ecological and socio-economic context. Through a critical analysis of existing literature and case studies from across Africa, the study identifies key factors hindering sustainable development in the region, including resource extraction practices, environmental degradation, community displacement, and governance issues. The study further explores the potential of participatory approaches, community-based conservation initiatives, and equitable resource management strategies to address these challenges and foster a more sustainable future for the Niger Delta.
