Dr Uyanwa Chinyelu Uzoamaka Helen Chinelo Onuorah, PhD
Abstract

This study investigated the ethical and value of education in secondary schools for sustainable national development in Anambra State, Nigeria. Three research questions guided the study and three null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The population of the study comprised 267 public secondary school principals, and data were collected using a validated structured questionnaire as the instrument for gathering information. The instrument was subjected to a pilot test which was administered on 20 principals in public secondary schools in Enugu State. Reliability of the instrument was determined using Cronbach's alpha, yielding a coefficient values of 0.80, 0.88 and 0.85 for Sections A to C respectively with a general reliability co-efficient of 0.84. Mean, standard deviation and t-test were used to analyse data for the study. The findings of the study revealed that ethical and value education is perceived as inadequate in Anambra State, with issues such as corruption, societal influence, and insufficient resources hindering its effective implementation. Despite these challenges, strategies such as policy formulation, curriculum revision, and better monitoring were identified as key to improving ethical education. The study also found no significant difference between the mean responses of male and female principals regarding the state, challenges, and strategies for ethical education. Based on the findings, it is recommended that both the government and educational stakeholders take urgent steps to strengthen the integration of ethical and value education in the secondary school curriculum to contribute to sustainable national development
