BLOODSHED AND ITS CONSEQUENCES IN GENESIS 4: IMPLICATIONS FOR CONTEMPORARY IGBO SOCIETY

Dr. Emmanuel Chijioke Agoha
Abstract

This paper examines the narrative of bloodshed in Genesis 4—the story of Cain and Abel—and explores its moral, ethical, and sociocultural consequences. The study employs a biblical-exegetical and empirical approach to analyze the theological significance of fratricide and the divine response to violence. It further contextualizes the findings within the socio-cultural framework of the Igbo society of southeastern Nigeria, where cases of bloodshed, ritual killings, communal violence, and political assassinations have assumed disturbing dimensions. The paper argues that the Genesis 4 narrative offers profound theological and ethical lessons that can guide the Igbo society in confronting violence and promoting justice, reconciliation, and communal harmony. Data were collected through interviews and focus group discussions with religious leaders, scholars, traditional custodians, and community members. Findings reveal that there is a disconnection between religious profession and ethical practice, particularly regarding the sanctity of life. The paper concludes with recommendations for integrative ethical education, community-based justice systems, and theological re-orientation.
