DRUG ABUSE, HUMAN NATURE AND SPIRITUALITY: EXPLORING THE CONNECTIONS

Celestine C. Ozor Simeon C. Dimonye, Ph.D
Abstract

Drug abuse is the result of 'some bizarre' changes or experiences within the victim. These changes are considered bizarre due to the victim's ignorance of the basic truth about human nature and the place of spirituality in the human life project. If these changes were understood from their right perspectives, perhaps the attitude of the victim of drug abuse would have been radically different — one that would not lead to the unfortunate end of drug abuse and its negative concomitants. This paper explores how the basic truth about human nature and the place of spirituality in the human life project might interface with the chances of a person getting entangled in drug abuse/addiction. The study employed phenomenology and critical analysis methods: ?rst, to examine the experience of drug abuse from the third-person perspective, and second, to analyze the experience with the notions of human nature and spirituality as critical imperatives. The study concludes that what the victims of drug abuse are experiencing in the act is a misguided and misdirected attempt to ?ll the void that exists in every human person, which only knowledge about human nature and spirituality can ?ll when followed up with the right condition. The study is particularly instructive for the youth who, by virtue of their age, might have very limited knowledge about these spheres of life.
