THE ROLE OF NDLEA IN MITIGATING ILLICIT DRUG MENACE IN NIGERIA: A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF CONTROL MEASURES SINCE 1989

Felix Uju Dike, Ph.D.
Abstract

Illicit drug menace has become a threat to Nigeria's national security, public health, and socio economic development. Established in 1989, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has been at the forefront of efforts to combat illicit drug trafficking and abuse in Nigeria. This study provides a critical analysis of the NDLEA's control measures and their effectiveness in mitigating illicit drug menace in Nigeria since 1989. Using a mixed-methods approach, this research examines the NDLEA's strategies, policies, and programs aimed at curbing illicit drug trafficking, abuse, and related organized crime. The study also assesses the challenges and prospects faced by the NDLEA in executing its mandate. The findings of this study reveal that while the NDLEA has made significant strides in combating illicit drug trafficking and abuse, several challenges persist, including inadequate funding, corruption, and lack of effective collaboration with other stakeholders. The study recommends that the NDLEA should strengthen its institutional capacity, enhance its collaboration with other law enforcement agencies, and adopt a more holistic approach to addressing the illicit drug menace in Nigeria.
