THEOLOGY OF PRAYER AND THE NIGERIA CONTEMPORARY MISCONCEPTIONS

Elisha Samuel Dih
Abstract

The practice of prayer in contemporary Nigeria has received different expressions. Some believers pray irreverently, misguidedly, and selfishly. The focus of their prayer is more anthropocentric rather than Theocentric. The growing misconceptions of the theology are causing believers to pray unscriptural prayers, thereby influencing and teaching other believers' wrong theology that is repugnant to the sound theology of the Word of God. Therefore, this paper argues and points at some misconceptions considered theologically erroneous and are currently trending among believers. Returning to the Scriptures is the indispensable means of correcting the informal theology to help believers have the correct perspective of God in prayer. This paper aims to see Nigerian Christians becoming vibrant in praying scripturally. Thus, it recommends that the return to the Bible, the primary document for doing theology, will ensure the transformation of Nigerian Christian space. The research adopts critical theological analysis as the method to achieve this.
