Deliver Us from Violent Men (Psalm 140:1): Kidnapping and the Biblical Mandate for Justice in Nigeria

Virginia Malakalya Shuaibu
Abstract

Kidnapping has emerged as one of the gravest manifestations of insecurity and structural violence in contemporary Nigeria, threatening human dignity, family life, social cohesion, economic stability, and religious freedom. This article examines the phenomenon of kidnapping through the lens of Psalm 140:1, “Deliver me, O Lord, from evil men; preserve me from violent men,” interpreting the Psalm as both a cry for divine intervention and a theological mandate for justice. Employing historical-critical and contextual hermeneutical methodologies, the study explores the biblical understanding of violence, oppression, and justice in relation to the Nigerian socio-political context. The paper argues that kidnapping in Nigeria is sustained by systemic corruption, unemployment, weak governance, poverty, ritual criminality, and the erosion of family and moral values, thereby constituting not merely a criminal act but a structural evil that undermines the sanctity of life. Drawing from biblical ethics, prophetic traditions, and Catholic social teaching, the study contends that the Church and the state share a moral responsibility to protect vulnerable citizens, promote restorative justice, and address the root causes of violence. Furthermore, the article highlights the role of faith communities in advocacy, peacebuilding, moral formation, trauma healing, and the promotion of social accountability. The study concludes that Psalm 140:1 remains profoundly relevant in Nigeria’s context of insecurity, serving as both a lament against violent oppression and a prophetic call for justice, compassion, and societal transformation. By integrating biblical theology with contemporary realities, the article contributes to ongoing theological and ethical discourses on insecurity, human dignity, and national healing in Nigeria.
