MASKING AND MASQUERADING IN ARONDIZUOGU: A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE

Abstract

Masking is an important aspect of Igbo festivities. In Arondizuogu, it has an ancestral link, and there are steps taken to re-awaken their spirit into active performance. Masquerade is held in high esteem in Arondizuogu, where the mask is totally concealed. Acts of desecration is highly abhorred. Types of masquerades, roles and general dispositions in the society were discussed. Masquerade songs with their deep philosophical meaning were equally divulged. Exchange of charms (Iko-ogwu) and other diabolical practices were brought to the fore. All these activities which gave Ikeji its revered features were fully discussed in this work.
