Negritude: The Resurgence of African Culture, Art and Philosophy for Harmony and Peaceful Co-existence

Thaddeus B. Umaru
Abstract

The paper aims to highlight the treasurable nature of African cultural heritage and the need for Africans to continue to own, harness and showcase the uniqueness of what it means to be an African for harmony and peaceful co-existence in the society. Every human community is inimitably endowed by nature for the growth of such a group as they strive to engage in more skilful ways of conquering their immediate environment in the creation of a distinct civilisation. Africans through the centuries have fostered values that are culture-based, and on which communities hinge and have evolved. However, significant events in African history such as slavery, colonisation and imperial domination seem to have derailed and halted the process of advancement in spite of the astounding progress achieved. This paper focuses on the Philosophy of Negritude (Blackness) which centres on the resurgence of (Black) African cultural heritage for a sustained process of peace and harmony within African societies.
