INFLUENCE OF THE INTERNET ON BUSINESS EDUCATION STUDENTS’ RESEARCH IN COLLEGES OF EDUCATION ANAMBRA STATE

Abstract

This study examined the influence of the internet on business education students’ research in Colleges of Education Anambra State. Three research question and two hypotheses guided the study. Descriptive survey research was adopted for the study. The population of this study comprised of both NCE and Degree students of school of Business Education in Federal College of Education (Technical), Umunze and Nwafor Orizu College of Education. The population was six hundred and seven (607) which was made up of (383) three hundred and thirty five students (both Degree and NCE ) from FCET, Umunze and (222) two hundred and twenty two students (both Degree and NCE) Nwafor Orizu College of Education of 2022/2023 session. Purposive random sampling was use to select the sample of 241 students for NCE and Degree from both Colleges of Education, Anambra State.The instrument for data collection was a structured questionnaire. Method of data analysis that was adopted was mean and standard deviation to analysis research questions and the z- test was used to test the hypotheses of the study at 0.05 level of significance. The study identified Some of the positive influence of internet search on business education students’ research include access to online journals, magazines and other information resources, enhance quality of students research, provide global sources of information and permitting researchers to discuss and share experiences among others. Again, Some of the negative influence of internet search engines include: provision of unwanted information to the students, causing students to lose our ability to focus and concentrate, most students are addicted to online social networks, lack of face to face Communication in research work etc Ways of curbing negative influences of internet search engines on business education students’ research to include providing relevant materials to students on the internet usage, good mentorship to students about negative effects of internet, good councillor to students on the effects of internet on their health, providing good and related information in the visual library. It is recommended among others that that heads of institutions liaise with other stakeholders and supporting management to provide internet facilities, students should be taught how to search for academic information or materials online and there should be effective supervision of students on internet use by teachers.
