STRATEGIES FOR IMPROVING TEACHING PROFESSION AND TEACHER’S COMMITMENT IN PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ORUMBA SOUTH L.G.A ANAMBRA STATE

Abstract

The project focused on Strategies for improving teaching profession and teacher’s commitment in public secondary schools in Orumba South L.G.A Anambra State. The study is a survey research design. Four research questions were formulated to guide this study. The population of the study comprised of two hundred and eighty-one (281) teachers in public secondary schools in Orumba South L.G.A. The instrument for data collection was a thirty (30) questionnaire items. The statistical tool for data analysis was mean. The results of the finding indicated; some of the challenges faced by teachers in public secondary schools that affect their professional performance and job satisfaction which include: teachers face challenges of not having access to enough technological resources to enhance teaching, teachers are not provided with sufficient opportunities for professional development. Also, the findings show that; teachers are more committed when they have opportunities for continuous professional development, and teachers are more committed when they receive adequate support and encouragement from school leaders. Based on the findings of this study, the researcher recommended that; Governments and educational bodies should review and increase teachers' salaries to reflect their roles and responsibilities; Schools should establish regular, accessible, and relevant professional development programs that focus on both subject-specific and pedagogical skills; School administrators should be trained in leadership skills that focus on teacher support, feedback, and recognition.
