STRONG ADVOCACY FOR PEACE EDUCATION IN NIGERIA SECONDARY SCHOOLS: PARADIGM FOR NATIONAL GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT

Jude Ifeanyi Onebunne
Abstract

This paper advocates that peace education be introduced as a subject of study in the Nigerian secondary schools. Peace is a state of mutual harmony between people or groups. Since education is the foundation of personal and national development, true education enlightens and liberates all who encounters it, it is then expected that peace education will go a long way in breeding harmony founded on justice and fairness. Going around the world today and in our dailies are the stories of war borne out of injustice, marginalisation and peoples’ agitation for their rights. This paper, through the method of critical analysis and appraisal advocates that it is pertinent that an enlightenment campaign through education be ensured since most of these wars were fought by the youth. This will restore justice, national growth and development and therefore foster peaceful co-existence between ethnic and religious groups. Through critical analysis the researchers in a subjective way expressed their opinions and viewpoints, they systematically developed and justified the topic and also assessed a variety of research papers across a range of related topics. The paper therefore, recommends that peace education is sure ways to alleviate if not obliterate the challenges of injustice in the near future. When children know the value of peace and have had a taste of it, it might be out rightly difficult to lure them to war, they rather resort to dialogue in the interest of justice and fair play.
