AFRICAN ECONOMIC PROBLEMS IN THE LIGHT OF CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING: A CRITICAL APPRECIATION

Valentine Ifeanyi Obiefuna Jude Ifeanyi Onebunne
Abstract

This paper claims that the fundamental economic problem of Africa and Africans is the continued economic exploitation of the continent and her people by a strategized foreign policy that is inimical to African development. The paper explains that this exploitation that started with the great exploration of African continent and remained through unjust institutions established in the name of neocolonialism. The economic problems via different fiscal exploitations of African natural and human resources often branded capital flow have continued to this day through puppet governments that serve the interest of the west especially through lopsided trade agreements and economic policies that disfavour Africa. The result is not only that Africa is ranked the poorest continent in the world but is also seen in the level of poverty and underdevelopment ravaging the continent. In the light of these, the paper recommends that application of Catholic Social Teaching (CST) is necessary for understanding African economic struggles and also in helping Africa to navigate out from poverty which is currently the most fundamental problem of the continent.
