ECONOMIC INEQUALITY: THE CHALLENGE OF HUMANIZATION OF CAPITAL AND REDSICOVERING THE GIFTCOMPLEMENTARITY PRESUPPOSITIONS

Cyril Chibuzo Ezeani
Abstract

The work makes a case for humanization of capital in the face of extreme economic inequality. It uses the methodological tools of phenomenology and hermeneutics. Presenting the alarming indices of wealth disparity, the work argues that such extremity among other things is engendered by undue monopoly of the capital and profit motif which is in the main reckoned in exclusive and individualistic terms. This exclusivist and individualistic appreciation legitimizes and justifies inequality. Highlighting the dehumanizing consequences of such polarization, the work further argues for the humanization of capital which goes with a more inclusive appreciation of capital and profit motif. This is all the more when one considers the gift-complementarity presuppositions of all human achievements and existence in general. The basic understanding here is that the current outrageous income and wealth inequality remains a human creation. Since we as humans socially construct the kind and amount of inequality that we have, we can change both the kind and amount of inequality that we have if we want. And here, the logic of division and polarization must give way to the logic of harmony and complementarity.
