FEDERALISM AND NATIONAL UNITY IN NIGERIA

Abstract

This paper adopts a critical approach to addressing the problems relating to federalism in Nigeria’s multi-ethnic society and the methods of solving these problems to promote national unity. Rooted in the events of the trans-Sahara trade, the trans-Atlantic slave trade and colonialism, and complicated by centuries of inter-tribal conflicts involving the tribes, Nigeria’s problems are as diverse as the over two hundred and fifty cultural and people groups or tribes in it. With the tribes having different worldviews, social and moral values and orientations, they are hugely polarised and deal suspiciously with one another.
