RELIGION: HICK’S PHILOSOPHICAL PANACEA TO THE PLURALISTIC ETHNIC QUESTION IN NIGERIAN SOCIETY

AMOS FRANCIS DIKE
Abstract

Nigeria, a country characterized by a diverse nationality of over 250 ethnic groups and various religious affiliations, is obviously a pluralistic nation whose politics, economy and unity have been devasted by the destabilizing impact of ethnic divisions. What could be the role of religion in this situation? This research examines the concept of ethnicity with particular interest in Nigerian pluralistic challenges. It traces the history of ethnicity in Nigeria as an example of ethno-pluralistic society. By exploring the potentials of functionalistic religious theory in fostering ethnic reconciliation, the study contributes to the ongoing efforts to build a more united Nigeria. Employing Von Eckartsberg's existential phenomenological research method, this investigation uncovers instances of inter-ethnic dialogue, cooperation, and shared religious values that serve as building blocks for social cohesion. It identifies shared religious values that transcend ethnic differences and foster unity. The study highlights the pivotal role of religious institutions in conflict resolution and peacebuilding efforts. This research aside contributing to the ethnic discourse, serves as veritable material for further inquiry into social, political and religious challenges in Africa and Nigeria in particula
