FOSTERING NATIONAL INTEGRATION IN NIGERIA THROUGH SOCIAL STUDIES CURRICULUM

Abstract

Nigeria is faced with myriad of problems which, despite its numerous natural endowments, inhibit its development and even threaten its continued existence as s sovereign state. The paper examines the role of JSSSocial Studies curriculum in fostering national integration in Nigeria. The study discussed, among others, some of the factors responsible for the problems of national integration in Nigeria. It also, reviewed some conceptual issues on national integration and the reasons for the introduction of Social Studies curriculum into the school system. Thus, it revealed that Social Studies education empowers students and goes a long way toward fostering self-efficacy in them. The study also highlighted that Social Studies emphasizes good leadership and followership as necessities for national integration. This helps people to understand themselves and their ways of life thus, reducing conflicts, violence and misunderstanding in societies. It is recommended that the idea of training qualified teachers to teach the subject at the junior secondary school levels need to be looked into and that all Universities should start courses and programmes in Social Studies, ranging from Bachelor degree to Doctorate degree level.
