NIGERIA AS A FRONTIER OF DEVELOPMENT: AN ANTHROPOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF INDIGENOUS INSTITUTIONS, CULTURAL RESILIENCE, AND SOCIAL TRANSFORMATION

Dr. Robert Uwaifo Ijegbai
Abstract

Nigeria provides an important context for examining the relationship between development, indigenous institutions, and cultural resilience. This paper examines how traditional social institutions, including kinship networks, age-grade groups, customary governance systems, and ceremonial authority, continue to influence development and social transformation in Nigeria. A qualitative research design was employed, using secondary data drawn from peer-reviewed journal articles, government publications, policy documents, and reports by national and international organisations on development and indigenous governance. The data were analysed thematically to identify patterns concerning the roles, resilience, and challenges of indigenous institutions. The findings indicate that indigenous institutions have remained resilient despite colonial disruption and, state-led development interventions. The study revealed the indigenous social cohesion support, community mobilisation, conflict resolution, cultural continuity, resource management, and local legitimacy, particularly in rural and semi-urban communities. The study further shows that development interventions are more effective when local knowledge is incorporated and indigenous institutions participate in planning and implementation. However, their contributions are constrained by gender inequalities, political interference, generational changes, and tensions between customary and formal institutions. Drawing on development anthropology and post-colonial institutional theory, the paper argues that development should be understood as a culturally situated process of social transformation rather than merely an externally driven economic activity. The paper concludes that recognising and strengthening indigenous institutions can contribute to more inclusive, sustainable, and culturally appropriate development pathways in Nigeria.
