Humanity and Ecological Footprints: Christian Eco-Spirituality and Environmental Sustainability in Lokoja Metropolis

Kanayo Nwadialor, PhD Sunday Temerojo Odibor
Abstract

This study explores how humanity and ecological footprints impact environmental sustainability in Lokoja Metropolis, Nigeria through the lens of Christian Eco-spirituality. By understanding the local environment, the study provides a paradigm to measure the effect of humanity’s environmental actions on local ecosystems. While the concept of Christian eco-spirituality is often employed in discussions about global environmental justice, this research expands the scope of its application to the local context. Firstly, it discusses the history of environmental degradation in the region and its correlation with human exploitation of the ecosystem. Secondly, it explores the potential for Christian ecospirituality to provide a framework for addressing some of the most pressing environmental challenges facing the region. Using the data gathered from primary and secondary sources, the paper demonstrates that Christian eco-spirituality is a way to link religious practices with environmental stewardship. It therefore proposes a number of recommendations such as encouraging community-level environmental stewardship initiatives, and promoting dialogue between religious leaders and local policymakers. The paper concludes that Christian eco-spirituality provides a unique platform for spreading environmental awareness through its holistic approach to evangelism. It then calls for further research into the subject of Christian eco-spirituality as a potential model for sustainability in other similarly sized urban centers in Nigeria and across the globe.
