ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND POLITICAL PARTICIPATION IN NIGERIA

Arafat Idris Dzarma
Abstract

This paper explores AI's dual role in enhancing and possibly hindering political involvement in Nigeria, focusing on its impact on democracy and citizen engagement. AI offers promising tools to support democratic processes by creating real-time feedback systems, improving transparency, and enabling data-driven policymaking. Through AI-powered platforms, Nigerian citizens could more easily interact with political representatives, voice their concerns, and influence policy. Additionally, AI’s analytical capabilities can help detect trends in public opinion, enabling the government to respond proactively to social issues. However, the use of AI in politics also brings potential risks, such as concerns around data privacy, algorithmic bias, and misinformation. Without sufficient regulation and ethical oversight, AI could be misused to sway public opinion, limiting authentic political engagement. To address these risks, the Nigerian government must take a proactive role in developing policies that foster ethical AI usage. Establishing regulatory frameworks that ensure transparency, accountability, and inclusivity in AI-driven political platforms is crucial. This paper concludes with recommendations for policy frameworks aimed at maximizing AI’s benefits for democratic engagement while minimizing potential threats, ensuring that AI becomes a tool to strengthen rather than undermine political participation and well-being in Nigeria
