Abstract

The morality of war is a complex and enduring dilemma, challenging scholars and policymakers to balance competing values: protecting human life, upholding justice, and ensuring security. This article examines the major philosophical perspectives on war’s morality – realism, pacifism, and Just War Theory – analyzing their core principles, critiques, and real-world implications. Key issues like the distinction between combatants and non-combatants, probability of success, and justice after war are explored, highlighting the tensions between moral ideals and practical realities. The article argues that grappling with these ethical dilemmas is essential for promoting peace, accountability, and human dignity in an increasingly complex global landscape, and calls for nuanced consideration of moral principles, international law, and contextual factors in evaluating war’s legitimacy and consequences.
