The injunction of Christ that his disciples should love their enemies has been a thorny issue and has become an increasingly difficult message to preach about especially in parts of the world where the persecution of Christians continues. But it appears to be the uniquely Christian teaching which constitutes Christianity's soul and novelty. This article addresses some fundamental misunderstandings regarding this teaching, including who is to be considered an enemy of Christ's disciples, what loving them entails, and whether such teaching is merely idealistic talk or something realistic and practicable.
