THE IMPACT OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE ON HUMAN DEVELOPMENT

Kpamor Michael Sati, PhD Terzungwe Peter
Abstract

The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has had a profound impact on human development across various dimensions, including economic, social, cognitive, and psychological aspects. This paper explores how AI technologies are reshaping human development, particularly focusing on their implications for employment, education, healthcare, and interpersonal relationships. AI’s ability to automate tasks and optimise processes is revolutionising industries, driving economic growth, and creating new job opportunities, while also posing challenges in terms of job displacement and the need for reskilling. In education, AI is enabling personalised learning experiences, enhancing accessibility, and fostering global educational equity. However, the growing reliance on AI in decision-making and daily activities raises concerns about privacy, bias, and the erosion of human autonomy. The psychological and social effects of AI, such as the impact on mental health, human interaction, and societal values, are also significant areas of concern. As AI continues to evolve, its role in human development presents both opportunities and challenges, necessitating careful consideration of ethical frameworks and policies to ensure that its integration benefits society as a whole. This paper concludes by advocating for a balanced approach that harnesses the potential of AI while addressing its risks to support sustainable and inclusive human development.
