IMPACT AND PROSPECTS OF NEW PARTNERSHIP FOR AFRICA’S DEVELOPMENT (NEPAD) ON ICT AND CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT AMONGST AFRICAN NATIONS

Orji, Chidi Paul, PhD
Abstract

In their quest to redress Africa’s development problems after previous development initiatives failed, African leaders realized that if the continent is to matter in the international community in the 21st century, there is a need for it to rethink its development strategy. The emergence of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) is basically a pledge by African leaders predicated on a common and firm vision that they have a pressing duty to eradicate poverty and place their country, both individually and collectively, on a path of sustainable development. The challenging concern of African political leaders since the attainment of political independence by African countries has been the question of the poor social life and underdevelopment, which manifests itself in the form of poor health conditions, general poverty, infant mortality, and economic backwardness. It is therefore believed that NEPAD will reposition the African continent on the path of long-term development and minimize its marginalization and neglect in international economic relations. This work aims at examining the impact of NEPAD on the African continent. And how NEPAD’s Programmes have brought a renewed optimism and hope to its people. Key policy frameworks and programs on Africa`s socio-economic sectors, including those on agriculture and food security, infrastructure, science and technology, education, ICT, and capacity development amongst others, have been developed. Africa, through NEPAD, has witnessed a decade of change and significant progress in improving political and socioeconomic governance policies and implementation. Relative successes have been chalked up in the areas of peace and security, governance, economic growth, and women and youth empowerment.
