Abstract

This work is a qualitative research, and it adopts the analytic and expository method to questions the social relevance of axiological ethics. Axiology is a branch of philosophy that deals with value. It can be regarded as the worth of a thing, an action, a belief and even people. The notion of value has been an ever-present discussion in various fields of study and works of life, as individuals are forever faced with the challenge of finding worth and giving worth to everything around in our relativistic world. Although, as highly discussed in various fields of study, axiology; its meaning and nature are beset with four perennial questions, such as: are values extrinsic or intrinsic? Are values subjective or objective? Are values relative (changing) or absolute (eternal)? Is there a hierarchy of values? Over the years philosophers and pundits have given varied answers and opinions with regard to these questions. This has led to the deontological, the teleological and the relativistic thoughts of ethical valuations, where the deontological ethicists hold that values are intrinsic, the teleological ethicists hold that values are extrinsic and the relativistic ethicists hold that values changes and not static. This research therefore summits that, values could be relative, intrinsic or extrinsic, depending on its societal and individualistic considerations based on the circumstances that help to define or classify them
