THE INFLUENCE OF EXOGAMY MARRIAGE SYSTEM IN TRADITIONAL CONFLUICT RESOLUTION

Marriage is one of the most important and interesting institutions in every culture. More interesting is the custom and laws regulating the practice. Exogamous marriage as a marriage outside one's clan is found in almost all Igbo society today. This study exposed the role exogamy played in resolving conflict in traditional Igbo society in the past which has upheld its existence till date. The work illustrates the process of establishing peace and broadening social bonds and ties through intermarriages. This descriptive and expository research, traced the origin of exogamy marriage in Igbo land to a time when societies and cultures were still enclosed, when communities were waging wars against one another.
