Abstract

The interpretation of biblical texts is a long-standing challenge, with scholars facing numerous obstacles in understanding the scriptures. This study examined the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in enhancing biblical hermeneutics, transitioning from mere automation to augmentation. The research aimed to investigate the application of Artificial Intelligence in biblical hermeneutics, identifying its capabilities and limitations, and exploring how AI could augment the interpretive process, providing new insight and facilitating a deeper understanding of the scriptures. A qualitative research approach was employed, analyzing existing literature on AI and biblical hermeneutics. Thematic analysis identified patterns and themes in the data. The study found that AI has the potential to significantly enhance biblical hermeneutics, generating new insight, providing contextual analysis, and facilitating personalized study tools. However, challenges and ethical considerations must be addressed. Furthermore, the study contributed to the ongoing conversation about the role of AI in biblical studies, highlighting the potential benefits and challenges of integrating AI into hermeneutical practices. The research recommends developing AI-powered tools to support biblical hermeneutics, building on existing tools like Bible Works, Logos Bible Software, Accordance Bible Software, Bible Analyzer, e-Sword, NATS, and other notable tools. A collaborative approach between humans and AI is crucial, ensuring responsible and respectful integration into hermeneutical practices. By addressing challenges and embracing Al’s potential, the scholarly community can advance biblical hermeneutics and contribute to a deeper understanding of sacred texts.
