Abstract

This paper examines the philosophy of teaching and its application in the Nigerian educational context, with a focus on exploring diverse teaching methods to enhance the quality of education. The research investigates both traditional and innovative pedagogical approaches, analyzing their effectiveness and potential for addressing the unique challenges faced by Nigeria’s education system. The study begins with an exploration of fundamental teaching philosophies, including constructivism, behaviorism, humanism, social cognitive theory, and critical pedagogy. It then provides an overview of the current state of education in Nigeria, highlighting key issues such as inadequate infrastructure, overcrowded classrooms, and outdated teaching methods. Through a comprehensive review of literature and analysis of teaching practices, the research evaluates various instructional methods ranging from traditional lecture-based approaches to modern techniques like problem-based learning, flipped classrooms, and e learning. The study considers the advantages and limitations of each method within the Nigerian context, taking into account factors such as resource availability, cultural relevance, and scalability. The research also presents recommendations for improving education in Nigeria through the integration of diverse teaching methods, enhanced teacher training, curriculum reforms, and supportive policies.
